a Recap of what has been established so far for those who may be coming to the post late in the game...
When: Saturday 5/22 at 9:00AM (or earlier, parking is probably going to be a bear)
Where: Breakwater - Look for the people pointing and laughing at the OW students or the Scuba Board Banner... whichever is easiest..
So, I'm a noob to the monterey area and SB and I will be there. My better half is coming to... hopefully she will be done with her OW classes by then and we can go diving otherwise I have to convince her to stay on shore while I go diving (which is a tall order). Either way, food = me happy

May 9th Does work for us but May 22 we are busy and there is a race in the monterey area so the hotels will be full.

I haven't lived here that long. Someone please explain the impact on traffic, lodging and whatever because of the Laguna Seca race...

Whenever there is a large convention, classic car show, golf tournament, race, etc. in or near Monterey, both traffic and lodging tend to be negatively affected.
Lodging is usually the worst. Monterey has some great hotels and some real hole-in-the-walls. Divers tend to like the hole-in-the-walls because they're close to the dive sites, sometimes have hoses and "facilities" to rinse out dive gear, and are cheap ($50-70 a night). The quality of the accommodations matches the price you pay. When these events roll into town, these hole-in-the-walls jump up to $150-200+/night.
As for traffic, it often depends on the event and its particular schedule, but you can expect traffic around and into town being worse in the morning, and out of town being worse in the afternoon/evening. Parking/traffic around dive sites themselves tend to be less affected. As Monterey is a day trip for me, I usually ignore the traffic impact, but on occasion when I try to stay overnight, get hit hard by the motel rates.

Once you turn off 101 then drive a few miles Laguna Seca race track is on the right going down to Monterey, assuming you are South bound. See map here. Often during bigger races traffic will get backed up. I have found it is better to completely bypass the route and go in another way. Not sure what others do??
