They’re baaaaack
Not the full scale invasion but not normal this early in the year.
I was in the area today, just as some dimbo almost fed her toddler to a charging bull sea lion, in an effort to get a selfie.

Too much chlorine in that gene pool.

Ended up in Carmel River Beach and Maccabee -- both of which were far less fragrant and had decent six meter plus visibility . . .

Am I mistaken, or if I chest bump the biggest bull there and get him to back down, then I can claim the entire beach for myself, and also something about a "harem"?

You can try it but I fear they will close the beach down permanently once they haul your body away. ;)

Looks like they've closed San Carlos again: Monterey beach closed due to sea lion invasion
Just as well.

Water samples taken last week, at the Breakwater, were positive for both Cryptosporidium and Giardia H, from the sea lions and their frequent Baja blowouts, on the beach and in the water -- neither of which you want setting up shop in your own gut.

Oddly enough, that threat of parasitical infections didn't make the local news, at the arrival of the Summer tourist season; but the seasonal mussel quarantine did get its fifteen seconds . . .

So I'm assuming diving McAbee is a bad idea too...

I hope McAbee is OK, as I dove there yesterday. Not only was Breakwater closed, but Monastery was closed too (I was told for filming a movie). Viz was excellent, 30'+ out at the Pinnacle. I'm hoping that's an indication that the water was OK.

The meter I was at, right in from of El Torito, had a 4 hour limit. There's also a paid parking lot not far away, across the street, with plenty of parking. Im imagining McAbee is gonna be very popular for as long as the sea lions are pooping all over Breakwater.
