You can dive wet, I would suggest a 7mm semi-dry. Diving in the summer you will get the upwelling, which means poor viz but more life in the water. In the winter it tends to clear up but have to time it between "storms". I would suggest doing dive sites "inside" the bay 1st such as the coast guard break water (the go to training site), hidden beach or Mcabee beach. The more south you go the more exposed the sites are. Carmel, Lobos and Monastery are all excellent dive sites but conditions can change rapidly.
