As far as weather/current conditions, are the chances of diving Molokini in December still okay? Are the dive charters re-routed often because of winter weather? Thanks.

Not sure, but FYI, the ocean is flat as a lake today and I could ski there from Oahu today. IF you do make it, see if you can do the backside, lots of whales there and the wall is impressive. Viz, the major issue at the moment, should be better there.

The only times they don't take boats out to Molokini are for specific days of bad weather, and it's usually only 1 day at a time. Time of year might determine the frequency of this happening, but it's still pretty uncommon. Molokini is fairly well sheltered and most of the boats go early in the morning when seas are calmest.

I was there today and the largest wave we saw all morning was less than 6 inches. It was a day even I didn't mind being on a boat

Aloha, Tim

P.S. Vis was *only* a bit over 150ft today :D

Well, Tim, do we get a report or is that it? Can I guess the viz?....75?

Viz yesterday at Molokini was about 200'. Since Molokini is out in the middle of the channel with the nearest sand 250' down, the visibility is almost alway around 150'. The current was running reverse of normal, so we drifted from the backwall north/clockwise around to Reef's End. We got picked up as a squall line came through, and the wind had been blowing pretty good, so there was 4-5' of wind wave.

Strangely, the viz closer in to S. Maui, at "The Apartment" (110' to the sand, offshore from Makena) was unusally good for that area -- about 100'.

There aren't many days when Molokini is not diveable. What happens more often is that a large west swell makes getting in and out of the Kihei boat ramp too dangerous. That's perhaps 5 or 10 days per year.

oh, man. I figured it should be good but 150, 200 ft? Beautiful! Today is SO flat.

We were scheduled for Molokini a.m. Feb 8, 2006 and got turned away. High wind and lots of chop so no boats were on the site. The other days would have been fine for that week.
