The absolute first duty of a new mod is to ensure that I have a shiny new speedo each month! Notice, I didn't say laundered as was implied earlier.
What should you do next? hmm.. thats a gooood question, help keep an eye out for spammers, when you find one, let a Mod-in-Green know so we can bind, gag, and ban him/her on the spot!
Given your present location, I would suggest that being the primary mod for PR would be a good start, the rest of the board being your secondary domain with the exception of the DIR forum which if your anything but one of the "accepted ones" will create mass havoc and MANY reported posts. Dont mess with the DIB (divers in black) and they won't mess with you!
