I just found someone in France who said he could do it for about 7 euros/10 dollars a piece. He has some questions:
  • Can the head be 17 or 18 mm instead of 11/16"? I tentatively said this is unlikely since you guys already ground your sockets
  • Can the quantity be bumped up to 50? In other words can we find more candidates?
The source has or has access to a CNC machine and sells and makes Scuba parts.

Sounds good to me. Sockets are cheap. I suspect 17mm would be the better choice. Adding the .5mm could made it tight for the socket to fit in the recess in the cap. If you need a sample to work from, I do have a couple spares (brass). I'm in for 5 and will take up to 10 to make quantity.

Yep. One out of three 18mm Craftsman 3/8th drive sockets would not fit in either of two caps I tried.

The "French Connection".... now if we order from this guy, Gene Hackman isn't going to kick our doors in is he???!!! :D

Nice work, Zung.

Now that I've been bitten by the Mk5 "bug", I'd also be interested. I will be shifting the blame to you guys if the wife starts thowing things at me, however... I'm such a coward.... I could do 5... :D

Best wishes.

Edit: 1+ what awap mentioned regarding socket size.... 18mm might require grinding the sides of the socket? Not something I'd care to do. I can't remember if either of my 18 mm sockets fit inside the cap either... 17 mm's did, and of course the 11/16 did.

I'm a MK10 guy, but you can still put me down for 2 just in case. ....thanks bro.

I have a MK5 currently unused; I can take the bolt out and give them as a model. I just need to grind off the chamfer of my virgin 11/16 socket: any secret technique I should know? I suppose a Dremmel won't cut it...

Considering the amount of Mk5's I have, I could probably justify 5 for myself (stupid ebay).

Leadturn, I have found justifying repair parts to the wife is much, much easier than additional equipment. At least parts don't take up the same amount of space. :D

I didn't have to grind off my socket. The stock Craftsman 11/16ths works fine. But I have used a dremmel tool to turn a 1" socket into a yoke nut socket. Lots of cutting and grinding but It worked fine.

I needed to grind the chamfer off my poor 11/16 to get enough "bite" on the turret bolt. Being a low tech, shade tree mechanic, I used a flat knife-sharpening stone, honing oil, and lots of "elbow grease" :rofl3:

It worked (eventually).... it is the same way (with more caution) that I resurfaced a R109 orifice :dork2:

Best wishes.
