DNA test shows bone fragment from missing spearfisher
A bone fragment recovered by the Fire Department in waters off Alii Drive has been confirmed by DNA testing as belonging to 49-year-old Paolo Dominici, of San Francisco, who was reported missing after spearfishing in Kailua-Kona.
Police officials are continuing their investigation while awaiting further forensic tests. Detective Sharlotte Bird declined to release any further information regarding the case or when the bone fragment was recovered and how DNA testing was conducted and returned within 11 days of Dominici being reported missing.
Dominici went spearfishing with a friend offshore of the Kona Makai Condominiums on Alii Drive around 6:45 a.m. April 11. He was reported missing at 10:47 a.m. after he failed to return to shore.Fire Department personnel located items belonging to the man and turned them over to police.
Witnesses reported seeing a boat in the area where Dominici was believed to have been diving. An inspection of some of Dominici's recovered items indicate that he may have been run over by a boat.
Investigators are still seeking the public's help in locating witnesses or individuals who may have any information about boats in the area of the Kona Makai Condominiums on April 11 between 6:45 and 10:47 a.m. Police ask anyone with information to call Bird at 326-4646, ext. 228, or the Police Department's nonemergency line at 935-3311.
