Body Of Missing Hunter Located - Greenville News Story - WYFF Greenville

SENECA, S.C. -- The body of a hunter who had been reported missing was found Monday.Coroner Kandy Kelley identified the hunter as 33-year-old Jason Corey Stone. Kelley said that Stone’s body was found submerged in Keowee River/Lake Hartwell. She said his waders were full of water and he was not wearing a lifejacket. Kelley said that Stone drowned, but an autopsy will be performed to confirm the cause of death.Stone, who was from Easley, was the father of five children.Emergency workers from Pickens and Oconee Counties searched for Stone, who had been coon hunting Saturday night. He was last seen around 3 a.m. Sunday morning near Lake Hartwell.Chuck Haynes, with Pickens County Emergency Management, said, “The family and friends were tremendous in giving us information on him and his abilities and where we hunted. If it weren't for their help we certainly would have been out here much longer.”Haynes said, “He was found in the water in the location we had information (that) he would be in."Deputies from both counties joined Pickens County Emergency Management and the Department of Natural Resources in the search.Haynes said Stone’s last known location was in the boat near a bridge. He said, “The DNR is conducting an investigation as far as the boating accident side. If the boat was an issue, they're doing that part of it. They would also do the investigation as far as being located in the water."The staging area for the search was set up at a boat ramp near Lawrence Bridge Road, not far from Seneca. The search involved a helicopter and dive teams near the Pickens and Oconee county line.Dive crews were called off at sundown on Sunday, but boats continued to search with sonar.About 50 friends and family members gathered near the search staging area to stand watch Sunday afternoon.Scott Loftis, of Oconee County Emergency Services, said officials did not initially release Stone's name at the family's request.

Kudos to those involved in the search! Good witness interviews go a long way in identifying the search area and it appears that all involved did a good job in bringing this search to a conclusion.
