LOOKING FOR A TOURIST WHO WENT AWAY WHILE DIVING IN THE NORTH AREA OF THE ISLAND.
#Cozumel. - Information collected indicates that 74-year-old Gregory Romes, along with other people, went out on a diving tour at 10 a.m. this Saturday, and after the estimated time, everyone boarded the vessel Deep Exposure 2, except the septuagenarian.
The captain of the vessel alerted the maritime authorities near one in the afternoon and immediately the Search and Rescue Station (ENSAR), Civil Protection and other authorities were activated to attend to the report.

As I understand it from online reports and talking to friends of Greg, there were 4 divers and a DM. The other divers all surfaced after getting separated by strong currents. Greg did not. Greg is an experienced diver with many dives in Cozumel. The dive site was San Juan, on the north end of the island. The dive operator was Deep Exposure. The operator put out a call to marine rescue and a search began shortly thereafter. Around 12:30pm. The winds were strong as well and the ports were closed for a few hours later in the day. But it appears the closure occurred after Deep Exposure left port. There are reports of other boats diving in the southern parts of Cozumel at the same time. At this time, to my knowledge, Greg has not been found. But all details still remain to be confirmed.

I thought that it was required to dive with a DM in Cozumel?
It seems he was diving with a DM, but that requirement is only for diving in the Marine Park. The Park extends from the north end of Paradise Reef around the south end of the island up to, I believe, near Rasta's on the east side. I have heard that there are more protected Park reefs north of town; possibly San Juan is among them, but to your point, one can dive without a DM outside the park.

Well if not required up north diving with the DM that can read the currents etc just makes sense.

I’ve been up north 3-4 times. Last time i was amazed how far we went. I usually dont mind currents but something about that dive just always gives me the willies and when someone suggests it I just think can’t we go do Palancar Caves or something relaxing?

Actually, Marine Park rules have now been extended to the North. And a fee is also being charged. As of end of last year. (I am a licensed Marine Park guide).
