Six of us from the Tallahassee Scuba Club headed to Branford, FL to dive a couple of local springs on Saturday. First we stopped at Troy Spring on the west side of the Suwannee River just a few miles NW of Branford. We were the second ones in the water, which turned out to be about 40ft visibility and grennish. The flow after a flood really kicks up the sand. Otherwise, the basin looked great. We swam down to the wreck of the Madison, which is an old civil war era boat that was abandoned in the spring run. I fanned away one of the ribs and uncovered more of the wreck with a bolt attaching the rib to the bottom. Very cool history.
After lunch in Branford, we headed up the east side of the river and stopped at Royal Spring, a shallower spring, but usually empty. Visibility was a bit worse, about 20ft, which seems normal for this spring, especially after a flood. There were a few locals swimming around, but no other divers. We did a short dive, explored the cavern, and then headed home.
