Might there be interest in putting together a low budget trip to Roatan?

I'll be there 6/18 - 6/25! Definitely be interested in getting to know others if they're going to be there in the same timeframe.
I'll be in-country then. Let's see what the interest is for a "friendly" for that week, too. I spend most of my time in the northwestern mountains. It takes me a full day to get from my home there to the islands, but even if I can't be there for every possible week, I'll still be happy to help plan.

You can find good budget backpacker info of you scan the lonely planet thorntree online forum. Utilia has that cast away feeling - Captain Morgan's on Jewel Cay is even more removed and perhaps the only way to dive the "good" side of the island daily without locking into a more expensive "resort package". Think the shared rooms are $5 per night. If I recall correctly, dives were around $25 each if you book 10 and bring your own equipment. Their rental gear was old (so bring your own reg/mask)

There are also pretty nice budget rooms on the main island, with hammocks, ocean access, hot water, kitchen access (which saves a bundle on eating out), squeeky clean for $18 per night (at least that was the price last year). This gives you night life options and access to the bigger dive shops. Accomodations are cheaper if you share rooms.

If you want more details feel free to PM me. I'm itchin' for Mexico or SE Asia, so regretfully have to pass on this one.

Have fun!

Out of curiosity, since not everyone's on the same budget, what are you referring to as "low budget" for Roatan?
Whatever low budget is for the interested diver. As one here said, Reef Gliders have bunks that are free when available for their divers. I eat a lot of baliadas and fruit...leaves more room in my food budget for after-dive beer :D The dive prices themselves are pretty standard between the West End ops, but one can buy them in discounted blocks and still have flexibility.

Diving Utilia is a bit cheaper - I'm just saying ;).
Very true, and I would LOVE to meet a group there as well. I'd like to pick up my kit on Roatan first. I like to use my own old Zeagle and my seacure. They fit me better. It's been a long time since I dove Utila. A few days here, a few days there...all sounds good to me;)

This new string is to explore that possibility.
For newbies to Roatan, understand that West End and West Bay, though just a very short water taxi ride apart, are two very different places. This string is about planning a backpacker style “friendly” (as in futbol parlance) dive trip to West End village.

Great general info: www.roatanmarinepark.com please note that no matter what shop we choose, we all pay a small fee, once a year, to support this fine effort.

If nothing has changed since last year: You can start in Roatan, Reef Gliders is a nice shop. Then hop Verns catamaran to Utilia, come back and dive Roatan again ;-). If you leave Utilia in the morning, you may even be able to catch the afternoon dive in Roatan :).

Ok, the place is called-- Rubi's Inn which is perhaps the best value on Utilia if you want comfort/budget but books up fast: rubisinn@yahoo.com

Maybe someone has more current info or can confirm these details :dontknow:?

Have fun!

Thanks for info Deba and Kathy!

So is the diving "better" on Roatan or Utilia? I don't care about night life, perfectly happy to cook for myself and read a book on the beach.

Looks like Continental has a direct flight from Newark on Saturdays, which is nice 'cause all the other ones I saw were in the 25 hour range with layovers at LAX or Houston...I don't have enough vacation time to waste it in airports more than I have to.
