David - your best bet to get out to the middle grounds is to hook up with some of the spearo's. Thats a favorite place for many of them to hit and there are quite a bit out of tampa area. Promise some action shots and sharing the photo's with them and I'm sure you'll find a ride. If you can do video as well... :D

Colin it would be wrong of me to do that as I don't agree with spear fishing. Don't get me wrong I'm not looking down on anyone in fact I would love to do a dive With TD. Its just how I feel and it would be wrong of me to go just to get a dive and satisfy my own needs after I have stated that I don't agree with it.
TD don't mean to offend, I used to be a big hunter and poacher :11: in my younger days but, after I started doing photography I got a lot more out of photography than hunting and my views changed.

That'd be just fine with me...the good thing about diving with spearos or formal spearos is the high liklihood (in my experience) that their diving skills are often well developed and they won't freak out when something unexpected happens.

With photography, all I got was film, processing and tons of not-very-good pics - maybe one good one out of 5 rolls or something like that...and that was in exotic, caribbean locations with 100 ft plus visability!!!

My odds of coming home with something I could actually use, like fish for dinner that was SO much fresher and enjoyable than the stuff they sell at grocery stores, were much better than getting a pic...plus at least I know where it came from and how it was treated...which for me is a big plus. Also, never take more than I can use....or share with friends! :)

I am with you on that you must have reasonable diving skills before you can take on any task u/w. I have done a drift dive where buddy could not manage smb so I ended up with the smb and doing photography.
I was lucky I did photography on land before starting u/w but there was/is still a lot to learn.

Vis in the grounds can run from lousy (10'-15') to great (75'-100'+). There are several charters that go to the grounds, the JRII as mentioned, the Cubera (run by chad carney), the holy spear-it and a few others, most are 2-3 day trips, some will do a 1 day trip (we chartered one for a 1 day MG trip for the SB open).

Most of the dive charters will be spearfishing, but I'm sure you could shoot a camera vs. a speargun...

Most of the diving is 90'-135', if you want a shallow dive, just stay high in the water column, Amberjack should come swimming by.
