Do I pack my drysuit or leave it at home?

I'm going to be in Boston in mid-November on business for a few days. I can handle water temps to about 50 degress, have never been lower. What kind of diving would I find at that time of year in the area? Should I include diving on this trip or leave my gear at home?

I just went back through my logs and I don't see many 50's at depths over 20'. I would do the drysuit. I dive dry year-round. Are you looking to do a boat or shore diving? I think some boats are still running in November but I'm not sure. There are lots of shore dive spots to do.

Bring the Dive Gear!! New England has great diving even late in the season...

though there many not be as much "wild life" to see in these parts once the temps get below 50 degrees, there's other stuff

My last dive last season was Novemebr 11th temp was 50 at 20 feet and not too much action. Better if you are more interested in some underwater structures like rock formations or a wreck something like that, rather than looking for fish or lobsters. Also air temps may be a little cool so doing two dives might be "iffy" unless you have a place to warmup good between dives (especially if you are diving wet).

If you are planning on diving WET, I'd say its do-able but stay relatively shallow, have a warm place to go to after (heated car/van/truck) and go for rock formations, maybe a jetty or breakwater or something.

I have never dove at the site but there is the Scussett Jetty near the Cape Cod Canal which may be a nice cool weather dive, since it's shallow and temps south of boston may be a few degrees warmer than the north coast.

Since you have it, wear it!! Bring that DRY SUIT!! Many folks dive dry all year long and it will give you many more options. You may even be able to get a charter out to the Pinthis (South Coast wreck which most folks rave about) But if you are thnkng a shore dive, just dive the wall (left) at Folly Cove or The Chimmney's in Nahant

Great info. Looks like I'll try to make it work for 11/12 & 11/13. I'll need to get some new underwear. What I have won't work for 50 degree water.

I would like to do some wrecks. Any recommendations on charters?

CAPE ANN DIVERS OUT OF GLOUSTER,MASS RUNS ALL YEAR, HAS A HEATED / DRY CABIN ON THERE 45' BOAT AND RUNS TO SOME NICE WRECKS ESP. THE CHESTER POLIN STERN SECTION. THEY CHARGE $70.00 PER CHARTER BUT THAT MAY GO UP WITH FUEL PRICES. WATER TEMPS AT DEPTH WIL BE ABOUT 45. THERE PHONE IS 978-281-8082 GOOD OUTFIT TO DIVE WITH. MAYBE WE'LL SEE YOU THERE

My last day diving wet last year was Nov 11. In the shallows you're all set, but a drysuit would be the way to go for anything else. It would be good advice to hook up with a charter service, as well, like CAD. Bring your gear and see what happens.

If you are going to be in Boston, you should try, Boston Harbor Diving Company (617)970 0990 with Captain James Sullivan or Boston Divers Services (617)271 1062 with captain Pat Breen, the first leaves out of Winhtrop, MA and the Second out of East Boston, Both very close to the City, i'm still diving wet and right now at 60' i been getting as low as 52 F i never dove in November before i do not have a dry suit, but i guess you'll be fine if you have one, contact this guys they will be able to answer all your questions.

I don't know about Capt. Jim, but at last check Pat has to pull the boat out of the water in October due to insurance reasons. Double check.

Small correction Jim, I have to stop running charters on Oct 31. I am pulling the boat, weather permitting, Mid December. We have plenty of time left before summer ends. P.

I stand corrected. Even I make mistakes once in a while...ask my wife! LOL
