My wife and I learned while using standard jacket BCs that differed only in overall size. Renting was the same. But when we looked into buying, my wife tried on BCs cut specifically for women and liked them a lot better. They close differently across the chest and are cut relatively shorter to accommodate a generally shorter female torso. So, if offered no other choice, your wife might never know the difference. On the other hand, the difference is likely to be something she would appreciate.

My wife has a "universal jacket" and a women's jacket. She is very small and the universal fit XS is a bit loose on her shoulders whereas the women's specific small (S) fits her well. She is only 5-2 and barely 110 pounds. If your wife is taller or larger or both, especially in torso length and shoulder width (not meant in a bad way) then she may not really need a special women's high dollar jacket. Women seem often to be shorter in the torso than men so as an example a universal fit may be to long. Again, a taller lady may not have that issue.

Here my wife paddles by in her universal Aeris jacket. It fits OK as I said but notice carefully the gap in her shoulders area. This is typical for many smaller women when trying to use universal (aka men's) equipment.

Yeah, yeah, I finally cut the strap on her computer too, hated doing that. This jacket was 100 dollars new BTW, and no fear, she also has a custom made metal plate fitted, STA equipped, women's BC.
