Does anyone know about the onsite dive operation at Melia Vacation Club. We are thinking of renting a car for the week since we know most ops won't come up north but we also don't know parking availability mid-April.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

I stayed at Melia last May. We had a car and just drove to the caleta (~15min) to dive with Tres Pelicanos. You could drive to TPs shop and let them drive you the rest of the way, but parking in town is a pain, while parking at the (old) caleta was secure. Melia was nice enough, but we didn't partake in any of the on-site activities, so a hotel / resort closer to town would have been better for us. We preferred eating in town most of the time, too.

There was plenty of parking at the Melia.

I'm much more of a cheap hotel guy and was happy with the simple Suites Colonial last trip. I think I booked at $50-something/night, but then right before I left I found a $30/night quote for the place and Hotels.com matched that - gave me a refund. There are several cheaper listed on Kayak I need to explore for my next trip. Too bad the Cozumel hotels can't organize an association that compares hotels and links to direct booking as the booking site keeps so much of the charges.

I thought that Melia was a bargain resort with its cheaper location, but it's showing on Kayak at $205/night, booking direct with Melia - all inclusive?! Is that a mistake...??

Melia isn't bargain; I had a timeshare week to exchange else we wouldn't have stayed there.

I think we are totally different kinds of shoppers as I would never own one of those. I did a tour once; ended up laughing at the salesgal that anyone would ever buy one of those, and with no control.

I recognize one reason to own one, for the workaholic who has to be forced to go away by the commitment, but I love getting away.

If I was going to stay in the Northern Hotel Zone, I'd use Aldora.

Does Aldora run all that way for their southern runs? If you have to drive to Puerta Abrigo, you are going to have a car anyway. Course a taxi to Abrigo should be alot cheaper.

Aldora loads boats in town at the Aldora pier, so the run up to the Villa isn't all that long. That's their northernmost pick up for any of the sites, north, south, even sometimes east.

I enjoyed Melia on a day pass once. Not budget by any means, but beautiful facility with wonderful food service, multiple pools, many bars and seating areas, friendly staff. If I were vacationing, it was my budget, and I had a car, I'd stay there in a flash.
