DMP . . sooooooooo true. A transmission failure in a Sh!thook is a God awful mess

My sole training in an ultralight was a fellow telling me what the rotate and stall speeds were. I got into the stupid thing, took off and flew it.

Get some training - I'm an old stupid man.

Actually they are very easy to fly, but one has to be very, very, very careful of weather conditions, especially wind.

Sharkie, I want to learn to fly too. Um, no helicopters......but I was thinking about going across the street from my office building. We have a small commuter airport there. With all these 'old guys' still flying around, just how good does your eyesight need to be? :)

So how much is SHE allowed to weigh? I'm a lot bigger than she is so I'm sure I'm well over that weight limit and need a license.

Ultralights are, in a sense, more dangerous than scuba diving because you don't have to have training to own and fly one.
If you can pay for it, you can fly it.

The up side is that if you auger it in, you generally do no more damage than kill yourself and really tick off the squirrell that lived in the little nest that you trashed.

And even that can be hard to do because many of the ultralights have BRS's . . . ballistic recover systems - it's a parachute that, when everything goes to crap, you pull the rip cord and float to the ground.
 
Dogs make great flying companions. Before my split, my two JR's used to be my copilots. Cosmo actually flew right seat for me in a cross country airrace one year. He loved the low level looking out the window stuff. He made his first flight at 8 weeks old.
