Me 17, and my Dad 50 will be going on our first scuba course. As i am probably going to be younger than everyone else in the group what should i expect. I am alittle nervouse though. When you have the regulator in your mouth what does it feel like etc. What other things am i going to expect in our first course.

We are doing it at Sutherland Leasure Centre in Sydney, NSW. If anyone has done a course their could you also tell us what it is like?

you're gonna have lots of fun. it's an amazing feeling to be able to breathe underwater.

Refrain from saying the following: "I know about being old geezer anf all, but can you swim like your are going somewhere?"

That's right, don't say no matter how much you'll want to... :D

You will do just fine.

My daughter was 12.5 years old when she obtained her NAUI open water certification.
You may not be the youngest person in the class. She obtained her NAUI open water certification in the USA (cold water New England) so I can't comment on the training in Australia.

One of these days I hope to get to visit you country but it won't be until my daughter gets out of college. She is just finishing eighth grade so it will be a while before I can get to Australia.

should be fun. I enticed my dad to do it at 48... and I'm 16 he wanted to know what all the fuss was about and all the hundreds of $ goin down the drain for... he'll see this summer however. But reguardless I plan to make this summer a diving summer.. Goal is to log 120 dives in 3 months

cg16,

No need to be nervous, excited is probably a better word.

When you take that first breath, even in a pool you will realize that a whole world has opened up to you. If you have done any snorkeling then it will be a similar sensation with the whoosh and bubble sounds added.

What you can expect is to have things introduced to you in a very step by step fashion. You will be taught in a safe controlled manner that has worked for millions of mere mortals who have gone before you.

Relax and have a great time with your dad. I certified 2 years ago at 48. If he gets the bug like I did I hope you can keep up. :)

Pete

You will be fine. Everyone that I have come in contact with while learning to dive has been very helpful and vey patient. Breathing under water is totally cool. Just take your time and be calm. Good luck!!!

I took open water when my son was 15 pretty cool to do with your Dad. Have a great time.

I took OW when I was 13 with my dad. It was great! Diving together through the teen years (when parents become such a pain) helped us to stay close and not kill each other. :D

Enjoy!!

Being a little nervous is completely normal. It's healthy. Breathing underwater isn't natural!

Once you get through the class and get a few dives under your belt you'll be more relaxed and you will probably love diving. Not everybody does, so don't worry if you don't.

And you may very well not be the youngest person there. I've been in classes with 12 year olds several times.

Enjoy yourself and learn a lot!
