Has anyone out here been on any Cavern Diving Courses in Tulum or Akumal area? I am looking to travel there this winter and am interested in Cavern diving. Any recomendations?

Oh, you'll have so much fun! I did my cavern class with German Yanez of Yucatech. German lives on Cozumel, but will teach on the mainland (or you can do cavern on Cozumel, although the caves are quite different there!) German is a lovely man, very enthusiastic and very patient. He also did a lot of the original exploration of various systems, so he has some interesting stories to tell.

Another recommendation would be Dennis Weeks of Diablo Divers (he's Pez de Diablo on ScubaBoard). Dennis works out of Puerto Aventuras, which is also a nice place to stay and quite convenient to the fill station and the northern training caves. He's also a very nice guy, and although I have not dived with him, my husband has, and enjoyed it greatly. Dennis has a superb reputation on ScubaBoard as well.

I'll second both of TSandM's recommendations. I have been diving with Dennis several times and I have met and spoken with German at length.

Hi Graeme,

If you are in Tulum or one of the resorts near Tulum I would recommend Maya Diving in Tulum: Diving and Snorkeling in Tulum Cenotes and Reefs and Dive Courses.

The owner, Tim, is a fellow Canadian and will pick you up at any of the hotels in the area. His team is excellent. Budgy (one of the instructors) is ex an British Navy diver and has spent a lot of time in the caverns and caves in the area. They have 3 shops...1 at Dreams Hotel..1 in downtown Tulum and 1 at El Crucero by the Tulm ruins. They are very professional and you will have a great time with the team. The apres dive time is excellent as well.

If you want to get the biggest bang for your time I would stay in Tulum. There are a lot caverns/caves in around there... Gran Cenote...Car Wash...Angelita... Temple of Doom..Ponderosa and the famous Dos Ojos are all within a 15 -20 minute drive, so you won't spend your time driving long distances.

Enjoy your experience.

Sam

I did my full cave w/ German and would recommend him whole-heartedly. Just put some cash in the back account before you go because you see the them, there will be cave training and equipment in your very near future.

all you need is open water to go cavern diving. save your money for the dives.try playa scuba in playa del carmen.

Great advice... :shakehead:

He's looking for training, which could be the best he's had so far, BTW, and you tell him to go diving in an overhead without it. :shakehead:
