The above suggestions about Dennis and Aquanaut (aka Diablo Divers) Diablo Divers - Home are worth seconding. Dennis runs a great operation in Puerto Aventuras and both he and Martine are very accomplished in caves and caverns. The cenote diving throughout the area is world class and I would have no hesitation in recommending them to introduce you to this new discipline in diving....very safe and professional and great personal service.

Thank you for all the recomendations. I will go over evey one of them (except the one about not training) over the next while and make a decision. I am really looking forward to this and think it will be a lot of fun. Hope to post some pics after I get back.

all you need is open water to go cavern diving. save your money for the dives.

I am more interested in learning exactly how to make sure that I am going to exit the cavern before the last of my bubbles do. Seeing as a cavern is by definition NOT OPEN WATER, I will be taking the course.

Graeme, you'll enjoy the class, and what you learn will carry over into your other, non-overhead diving. You'll still get to see the cenotes, but with a lot more confidence that it's not a "trust me" dive. You're doing the right thing.

Well, now my vacation has come and gone. I went to Cozumel and ended up doing my cavern course with German Yanez. I made my decision mostly based on this and other threads on this board. I certainly learned a lot of skills that I will be using in all of my diving. Perhaps one day I will move on to cave courses, but for now I think that the cavern course has helped me identify some of the skills that I need to work on before moving any further. Thanks for all the suggestions, they were all considered, but through emails I decided that the best was to go was with that I did.

Well, I hope you told German that he was one of the people I recommended! He's a lovely person, isn't he? A very encouraging instructor.
