also, are there any boats that do diving and snorkeling? Is it hard to find a dive buddy on one?

also, is it worth bringing my own gear? (minus wetsuit, tanks, and weight)

Both Maui Dive Shop and Lahaina Divers will put divers and snorkelers on a boat. I don't know how MDS picks sites, but LD picks them for divers, which doesn't always make them great snorkeling spots.

If you want a full day, fun excursion to do, consider Trilogy. They do both diving and snorkeling off their boat, and I've heard that their full day Lanai trip is a lot of fun for everyone. They don't cater to divers so the diving is shallow and the sites are for snorkelers, but it's a way for everyone to have a fun day together.

Diving in Maui is done with a DM in the water leading the group. If you don't have a buddy, you can either pair with someone on the boat or just tell your DM that you're alone and he'll likely have you stick close to him. Although my husband and I always dive as buddies, many in Maui simply do "group diving" with the DM leading and don't worry about buddying up.
