Hi there,

I am a newly certified diver (15 dives) and am traveling to Maui (Kaanapali Area) with my famliy in April. some of my family members want to try diving with me. Neither of them are certified, so I was wondering where everyone reccomends I take them for the resort certification (intro to scuba).

there seems to be a million places that do it, but I'm sure that some are better than others.

any info you guys can share would be great.

thanks

I'm not familiar with Hawaii but let me take a minute to welcome you to the board. Looks like you have been lurking here for quite a while.

Shaka Doug does Discover Scuba, and is highly recommended on the board. You can get a good feel for Doug's attitude by checking out his website.

www.shakadivers.com, and you can always PM ShakaDoug.

He has the coolest ScubaMobile on the island too =)

Most of the big resorts on Kaanapali Beach have Discover Scuba and certified dives right in front of their property. Shaka Doug is a great option for shore diving opportunities in S. Maui (Kihei area). If you're interested in boat dives, check with Maui Dive Shop and Lahaina Divers. I believe both shops offer the Discover Scuba only on their afternoon charters and are about the same price. Lahaina Divers goes out of Lahaina, which is closest to Kaanapali and Maui Dive Shop goes out of Maalaea Harbor and Kihei (S. Maui).

Lahaina Divers is one of the ops we dive with when we're on Maui and we've always found them to run safe, professional, and fun charters. We have 2 charters to Lanai booked with them in April...when will you be on Maui?

One thing that Doug always brings to the table is fun.

Well he brings lots of things to the table but you can count on a good time.

IF you were headed to Wailea or Kihei, then Shaka Doug would be good. Since you'll be at Kaanapali, the best option is the dive shack at the Sheraton hotel. Right at the base of Black Rock, on the north end of the beach in the main resort area. They do lots of Discover Scuba, as well as taking certified divers on tours of Black Rock.

I 2nd the vote for the Scuba Shack at the Sheraton. My wife and I were there last year for our vacation and we did 3 dives with them. Lot's of fun, great guys...

Plus their pool is simply awsome. I kinda wanted to do a dive in the pool, but since black rock was right there.... LOL

Seriously though, if you have the chance get the 3 dive package, you get a daylight dive around blackrock, and scooter dive (DPV) out to two of the "micro reef's" just off black rock, and a night dive around black rock.

I did a huge write up on our trip out there, it should still be on this forum someplace....
