I'd say if its little traffic and fewer people in a cozy atmosphere that you want, Maui is not the place for you. The island has its remote areas that still maintain some tranquility, but it is starting to become like Oahu with chains moving in and people everywhere you go. I prefer the Kona Coast, but a little further south in Captain Cook is a place called the Monago (sp?) that has dirt cheap rooms and it is minutes from gorgeous diving in Ke'ei and Honaunau. It is as far from luxury as you will get, but it works for a place to lay your head. And the crowds in south Kona subside, too. Also, scope out Kauai for that uninhabited feel.
