Master Diver - worth getting?

My mom always asked me if I was a "Dive Master" so she'd be more way impressed with that than the stupid cave/ccr/mixed gas classes I wasted my time on!

Wow! I know you have a Nitrox card and a Rescue card somewhere in that stack. You never took 3 other recreational specialty courses?

4 specialties (max of one non-diving, like Nitrox) plus Rescue, and 50 dives is all it takes for SDI Master Scuba Diver.

Rescue is not a specialty.

I have a drysuit specialty card and an equipment specialist card. I think that's it for PADI specialties. I have specialties from UTD and PSAI. (People seem to think PADI is the only agency that teaches specialty classes.) I am a technical diver, and when you go through technical diving, you need to get a card almost every time you do a dive (yes, I exaggerate). I have loads of instructor cards telling what courses and specialties I am entitled to teach.

Great watches. But most people aren't buying a Rolex for its robust automatic movement.

My progression was OW -> Public Safety Diver -> AOW -> Drysuit -> Nitrox -> Rescue. Everything else was professional or technical. I'm a TDI, SDI, and PADI instructor but I don't qualify as an advanced diver or a master scuba diver either.

These are the SDI requirements:

1. Completion of 4 SDI, TDI, or ERDI Specialty Courses or equivalent; only 1 course without dives may be credited toward the Master Scuba Diver. Nitrox counts as a diving specialty.

2. Provide proof of 50 logged dives

3. Completion of the SDI Rescue Diver Course or equivalent

The "or equivalent" part is key.

If you want one, I can probably issue you an SDI Master Diver card.

I have been on a few different forums, The Rolex Forums for example, and it really doesn’t seem to take long for them to put a bad taste in your mouth. I have attempted to use them to glean some useful information. Granted one can take from them what you want. But this thread about MSD is sticking in my craw. Most threads on here seem, very quickly, to devolve into PADI-bashing. If an individual wishes to obtain an MSD rating - it is simply a personal accomplishment. It is not a money grab and it doesn’t need to prove anything to dive ops, self-proclaimed experts or cynical assholes that sit behind a computer.

Why did you ask about the MSD on a Rolex forum? Are there a lot of MSDs there?
