How is Marineland for boat diving? Is there a nice sandy anchorage area in 30 feet, or less, of water that's not too far from the good stuff?

Straight out from the cobblestone beach is a nice sandy area. Probably no deeper then 20-40ft. Its a short swim from there to the 120 reef and a decent "but very doable" swim over to Long Point.

If you ever need a Pin head to swab the deck and pitch in on gas during your PV boat dives, you know where to reach me:D frankpromutico@sbcglobal.net

I'll keep that in mind Frank, if go out Memorial Day weekend I'll drop you a e-mail. If people are cool I don't have any problem taking them out.
Thanks for anchorage tip. The last thing I would want to do is anchor in an area where I might damage a reef down below.

Another choice would be either anchoring in 45 feet next to where it says "anchor" on the map, or better still, Buchanan's Reef. It's quite spectacular compared to most of P.V.
Pinnacles as tall as 40 feet, rockfish, nudibranchs, octopus, lost anchors galore.

If Buchannon Reef is anything like Hawthorne Reef, let me be the first to suggest you go there....you will love it!

BTW, Phil, is it similar to Hawthorne Reef?? I'm sure it's similar to diving at the point without having to do the walk down the hill or the entry, so I'm sure it's great!

It's like the point on steroids. Some of the pinnacles begin in over 80 feet and come up to about 15 feet. Every rock is covered with life. Lobsters hide in mini-caves and rockfish follow you around. On my last dive at Buchanan's Merry and I never travelled more than 50 feet from the anchor. We spotted seven different species of rockfish and more than a dozen species of nudis without having to swim anywhere.
The main difference between Buchanan's and Hawthorne Reef is that you can get shallow at Buchanan's, giving you more time to enjoy it.

Wow, thanks for the description! I would really really love to dive there someday! Now just to find a boat....hehe. Think it would be doable to kayak out there and dive (assuming you could find a decent place to launch the kayak)??

Thanks for the info everyone. That whole "Marineland" area seems like great diving, I'm going to have to get over there. What's the average vis in the area?

If the waves are big it can be less than five feet. I've dived in less than one foot there before. It can also get spectacular, with 30'+ common during Santanas.

Angelique angelique_neugent@hotmail.com is trying to get some yakkers together to dive in the area. I'm not sure where she wants to launch from, but it's a good paddle from White Point or Malaga Cove.

On diveable days I've seen as low as 5ft all the way up to 30+. On average I would say about 10-15ft on a nice flat day.

A few coves up from Marineland, is Christmas Tree Cove. The low end of vis there is 10ft, with an average of 15-20ft. On some days I've seen over 40ft of vis, but that is a rarity.
