Hot Water
Lionfish Stings initial heat treatment
As the issue of the lionfish invasion has become the new thing. Keep in mind this information.
If hot water is not available, aspirin, or aspirin with codeine can be taken. (Do not use hot water and aspirin together.)[/I][/B]
This is absolutely untrue and potentially dangerous. Lionfish stings can cause hypotension, especially in a severe reaction. To advise untrained people to give codeine, which can itself cause hypotension, is reckless, irresponsible, and could result in death. This is in addition to the fact that codeine is a controlled narcotic in the U.S. and cannot legally be dispensed without a prescription.
There is no medical basis for the recommendation to avoid using aspirin and hot water together. Hot water denatures the venom, and aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may provide some pain relief. However, recommending the indiscriminate use of NSAIDs, which can have anticoagulant properties, is not without risk.
