I recently used a rental package with a Mares Rebel and Rebel Octo. The Rebel was not easy to breath of off and was really loud with each exhale. Is this because it was poorly maintained or because it is a low quality reg. I've used some cheap Oceanics and didn't have this problem.

....Mares makes good regs....I've got a couple of them...a mid priced one and an expensive one...both older models, and they've got fine performance and have been very reliable, so I'm not sure I'd 'dis' Mares regs based on your experience on a well used/low end rental unit.

So far I've only rented Mares regs and now own the Proton 42 - I've never had problems breathing or noticed them being noisy. Sounds to me like it might not have been maintained properly. Do you know the people at the shop you rented? I'd let them know so they can check it out. Better to let them know than to have someone get hurt because it isn't working properly.

Sound like it needs an Over-Haul. Mares regs are built to be abused.

I agree jac. I have had a Mares V16 proton metal since 2004 which has performed flawlesly. But, I have it serviced by a reputable shop annually.

It needs adjusting, probably. Did you tell the shop you rented it from?

(Lots of regs honk in the water sometimes. It's hard to tell how the reg acts in the water when it is being serviced out of the water.)

At least in the pacific, we let the shops know about regs that need adjustment by tying a knot in the LP hose of the offending bit. That way the DM does not have to keep track of which one needs checking. When the gear gets back to the shop any reg with a knotted hose gets checked.
