Hi All-

I settled on a Mares Abyss regulator a few months ago. I've been saving up the money for it, and could have sworn the price was $350, and wrote down as much on my budget.

Now, much to my chagrin, the price from the various dealers I've consulted is around $450. :(

Oh well, I should have put it on my credit card then. Was I dreaming then or has Mares upped their prices (which they have every right to do)?

Doc Intrepid:
I'll go for whats behind curtain #2, Alex.

Get an Apeks.

Works great. Less expensive.

Ebay is your friend.

Not to get off topic but I would not suggest ebay...reason being is because I got a set of scubapro mk2/r190 regs "used in great condition" and when I got em I instantly noticed that the hoses were "hosed" :11: so I took em in for service and the freakin housings were cracked and the tech said the first looks as if it has never been serviced but is overall in good shape. Soooo $165 later in repairs and service I have a used set of regs in great condition. I would suggest if you gonna buy things like this online at least get'em from a reputable dealer such as Scubatoys, Leisurepro, etc. that will at least gurantee their used equipment.

The new 2005 model goes for the higher price. It has a different mesh grid on the second stage claimed to reduce free flow in currents and improve breathing performance. I don't know if there are any other changes or how effective this is. If you are willing to buy the previous model, new, on the web, do a web search. You can find it for less than 350.

The Mares Abyss is a better breather than the Apeks and more solidly built.

I think you should Qualify that statement.. I happen to own both the Mares Abyss and a Apeks ATX100 with an ATX50 for an octo. As to how they breath, the ATX 100 wins hands down! Now if you compare the Abyss to the ATX 50, I would have to side with the Abyss as to its breathing charactersistics.

Try both, go with the one that you find works best for you.

Well, when I was buying my first reg, I tried the Apeks TX100 as well as the the Mares Abyss (beside a Scubapro MK25/S600 and a Poseidon Jetstream) and than I bought me the Abyss.
I have 2 brand new Apeks DS4/ATX50 and my old Abyss still breathes better.
The MR22 first stage has a much more solid feel to it that the Apeks and the Abyss second stage is made of metal and not plastics.
How's that for some quantification?
