You can often get them when checking in online 24 hours ahead of your departure. Not all airlines allow it but some do and it helps to be a member of the frequent flyer program.

Joe, I'm sensing a certain affinity for angels on your part.

I used Continental this trip, but I believe both Continental & American (and maybe others as well) let you check in on-line starting 24 hours before the flight. At that time they normally free up any of what they call 'premium' seats as well as the exit rows. I'm always ready to roll just before the 24 hour mark. As soon as the time rolls on my computer I jump in and try and grab exit seats. We're usually fairly lucky at it.
