Wave height: 3 inches
Water Temp:69 Suunto Degrees
MAX Depth:31 FSW
Nearest High Tide:&:34 a.m.
Nearest Low Tide: 9:36 a.m.

Comments: Saw a whole lot of nothing. Very few fish all sleeping, no bugs. One very inquisitive and pesky sea lion who kept by us and got in the way. Tried to point out a Spanish Shawl to my dive partner, but the sea lion had his nose on the tip of my finger trying to see what I was pointing at. Second time for both of us and I wanted to stay on the outer edges of the reef. We swam out around the reef towards Fishermans cove and then back across the Heisler Park and then out. We called the dive due to lack of interest. Still, it beat watching TV.

Hi everyone,

What an awesome weekend!!! My buddy Nap Bundid and I headed out on a boat to San Clemente Island Friday night. We arrived in good shape, 6 hours later. We did a total of three dives, a fourth was possible, but I was a wee bit cold after our third dive. Here is a recap of our dives:

Window Payne
91' 32"
viz: 80+
Temp: a cool 54 at depth (I could have sworn it was colder!)

Great wall diving, lots of 'Legal' bugs, beautiful fans, gorgorians and purple ones too, don't know the name of them; sea cucumbers, bat stars, ochre stars, black smith, girabaldis, rock wrasse, tree fish, purple urchins (HUGE), the usual stuff.

Pyramid Cove -East End Reef
77' 40'
viz: 100+
Temp: 55 degrees at depth

The usual critters, but the viz was just amazing. I felt that I could see for miles upon miles. This dive, took our time and shot off alot of pictures with my Canon Elph. The giant kelp is so beautiful. Really enjoyed just taking in the enviroment. Great walls and crevices on this dive. Very fun to explore, getting down, up close and personal. I was taking a pic of a yellow sponge, when I noticed a little hole next to it, with two 'baby eyes' staring at me. Hmmmmm.... it was a baby moray eel!!! Too cute! Unfortunately, camera shy. Would not show his pearly whites for me. Darn!

Twin Caves
45' 44"
viz: 15- 30'
Temp: 55 at depth

This was my least interesting dive. Not much to see. Alot of eel grass, TONS of kelp which made it difficult to get down underneath to explore the rocks and crevices. Due to lack of interest, I opted not to do a 4th dive here.

Ate a hearty lunch, took a long nap on the way back, watched a DVD and then we were back at dock. All in all, San Clemente Island is still one of my favorite places to venture off too.

Hope everyone had a chance to dive this weekend!

Take care,

Dive Buddy: Dan Schooler

Met up with Dan Schooler of San Diego at Laguna Sea Sports this morning at 8am sharp. We were going to either do Shaw's Cove or North Cresent Bay/ Seal Rock. Passing by Shaw's Cove, there was standing room only. No place to park. We made our way west to North Cresent Bay. Found two spots fairly close to the stairs. What luck! We got out of our cars and checked conditions. Looked good with 1-2' swells, very intermittant. Two divers were unloading their gear as we made our way back to the car. They stated it was a bit 'surgy'. That didn't stop us.

Dan and I got geared up and made our way down the steps. Did our buddy check and in the water we went. Ah....nice water temp at surface. Felt so good after swimming the cold waters off San Clemente Island yesterday. The water temps were actually about the same, but for some reason, San Clemente seemed a bit colder. Anyway....Dan and I kicked out aways...being that it was high tide. Almost being even with Seal Rock, we took a heading and dropped down. Vis initially was poor until we got to depth, then it cleared up. We made our way west towards Seal Rock.

Swimming over the rocks, we saw the usual sea creatures: bat stars, ochre stars, sea cucumbers, black smith, giribaldis, 'Legal' lobsters (those *teasers*), kelp bass, good sized calico bass, purple sea urchins, snails, a baby ray, black eyed goby's, blue banded goby's, sea anemone's, tube anemoes, ect.

The highlight of our dive, I would say was diving underneath seal rock. There must have been 15 sea lions in the water with us at one point. Most stayed above us, however, there were quite a few that wanted to come down and check us out. They were of all sizes too, even saw a baby, about 2' in length.

The divers on the surface who had told us about the surge were right. It was kicking up quite a bit. I normally do pretty good on my air consumption, but found my self blowing through it faster than normal.

All and all, it was a good dive. Wanted to do a second dive, but unfortuantely, Dan was having trouble with his ear and wanted to play it safe. We followed up our dive with a yummy breakfast at CoCo's, and HOT coffee for me to warm my bones. Dan was nice and toasty in his dry suit. Hmmmm....I think I might know where my tax refund check is going!!! :54:

Location: Isthmus Reef
Date: 20 March 04
Vis: 30-40 ft
Water Temp:59 degrees surface, 57 at depth
MAX Depth: 35 ft
Time: 61 minutes

It took us two attempts to make this dive. On our first attempt, kelp was plastered to the bottom by a current, but fortunately, when we came back an hour later at about 10, it had abated.
Anyway, other than the "usual suspects," I spotted an octopus flitting between holes. Didn't someone here say that was good luck? The sun came out during the dive, and the colors on the top of the reef were really gorgeous -- orange garibaldi, green kelp, purple corraline algae...made for a great safety stop.
