Tracking back to the Rock Lake project a bit, we had an excellent weekend last weekend and took nearly 160 data points. We have half contours for 90, 100, 110, and 120 feet and a partial contour for 130ft. We can produce the first partial mesh now. Thanks to James (Amascuba) and Justin (BigBubbaJ) for their efforts. Some of the dives were pretty arduous and involved in water times of approximately 90 minutes including deco.

Sounds great! Wish I were there!

Sort of. I was diving the Hydro Atlantic off Boca Raton instead.

Here is the data that we have logged to date:

Interesting project, what method do you use to measure?

Tom, I believe they are using their compass for direction, depth gauge for depth (duh), and a reel which has been knotted every 10-feet for linear measurement. I think they are doing partial (and sometimes complete) orbits at a fixed depth, taking measurements every know (or 10-feet). I believe they are trying to tie the line off every 10-ft where possible, and that becomes the point that is plotted.

I haven't been down with them since they started this project, but hopefully I'll be there next month.

Yes, we are using reels with knots spaced every 10 feet, and the knots are the point we are using to take a depth and compass heading INTO the wall. This seems to be producing a very acceptable data set. I think some eggheads are working on doing the vector mapping to get us a mesh.

We figure the accuracy will be +/- 20 feet (that is just my guess)

If we had a sonar device on a long rope, we could probably do all this in a day.

We are currently working on the northern half of the lake, from the east line to the west line.
