We're planning another trip to Indonesia with Lembeh as the first stop. I will be using miles for award tickets, and I can get to Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Jakarta as gateways. I know that Singapore will be easiest. But it's by far the most expensive. One way to Manado from SIN is around $ 325 USD, or just under $1000 for the three of us. So I'm seriously considering KUL or JKT. I can fly Air Asia including extra fees for overweight baggage (purchased in advance) and for picking a seat for around $300 USD for the three of us. Alternatively, Garuda flies from Jakarta to Manado for around $125 USD per person or $375 total. All three are direct flights. All three require an overnight, either in town or at an airport hotel. I'm guessing Jakarta makes the least sense as I'd still need to pick up luggage and switch terminals, would probably be tagged for overweight baggage, and Jakarta isn't known as the safest place. Kuala Lumpur and Air Asia is the cheapest option, but how big a hassle is Air Asia? How much trouble will it be to get to the LCCT? Or should I just suck it up and go through SIN?
I'd love to hear about anyone's experience with either Air Asia or Garuda out of Jakarta. (I've flown Garuda many times but have never been through Jakarta.)
