Malaria/Other Vaccinations - Roatan and Copan

Did the meds bother you? Any side effects? I am going with my husband and my two college kids and I think we will all take it to be on safe side. Guess I need to update Tetnus...

I didn't have any trouble with the meds or side effects. Take bug spray. The No see-ums were thick in Roatan.

I flew MIA to Tequc both times, connected from Tequc to Roatan.

I live in Savannah and the sand flies are so bad here I couldn't imagine them being any worse LOL

Went with:
Hep B (already had Hep A)
Tetanus
Typhoid
Malaria (Chloroquine)
Cipro (just in case)

What is Cirpo? Didn't you just get back?

Cipro is an antibiotic in case you get a stomach bug. We're doing the trip in early May.

I just bring Immodium for traveler's diahrea, has always worked well for me. Just pop one the moment you think there's something wrong.

Another two cents: Just saw my MD and we aren't doing any meds for our utila trip, based on her recomendation and our host's note that nothing is required or necessary. We are up on tetanus and both Hep vaccines. Skipping malaria pills. just DEET.

Also, note that most cases of gastroenteritis are viral or parasitic and cipro will not help, and can actually induce diarrehea in those sensitive.

My doc prescribed chloroquine for Roatan, but I'm still unsure if I want to take it. I probably will though; I took it during my 6 weeks in Ecuador, and had no serious reactions other than some vivid dreams! The peace of mind is worth it.

So out of curiosity, why the Hep A if malaria is the main concern with mosquitos? Typhoid?

What do you guys think about the water quality in Roatan? Is it safe to assume we should only drink bottled water?

Primarily because they are on the CDC list. Since I'll be going inland as well as doing Roatan, figured better safe than sorry.
