Thoughts on malaria/typhoid/other immunizations for Roatan?

Does anything change if going inland for a couple of days to see Copan?

Dave

For what it's worth, every time we have been scheduled to go to Roatan, we take the malaria meds. We also have our Hep A & B, typhus and tetanus shots up-to-date.

All it takes is one bite.

Don't forget to bring 100% Deet.

Regards,
Dave (aka "Squirt")

I think by now I have spent at least 20 weeks in the bay islands at one time or another without malaria medication and without contracting malaria. Having said that, I have heard of at least one person being infected on Roatan.

We're going to CCV in 11 days!!! YEAH!

We started our malaria meds today, choloroquin I believe - whatever CDC recommends. We did typhoid as well. I did hep A/B and my wife did just hep A since she won't be diving. Its our first time so we thought we'd rather be safe than contract anything. Next time - who knows, it pretty much comes down to personal preference. I haven't felt any ill affects today from the malaria meds other than feeling a bit "off". Like a barely noticeable dull headache.

Just curious -your wife did not do the hepatitis B since she isn't diving. What is the relationship between diving and hepatitis B?

I acutually just went to the doctor today and spoke with her about that. I went on the CDC web and where she had mentioned yellow fever there is none in Honduras. I think I will take the anti-malaria medicine before I go. Not worth the chance. Better safe than sorry.
Does anyone know if they ask for copy of shot records when you go into the country

Lynn I would take the extra precaution as I am by using insect repellent vigorously throughout the trip. It is obviously not a cure all, but a very good preventative measure.
I will be traveling there in July (Peak Mosquito Season) with my young son and a pregnant wife, so believe me I have concerns.
Seems that Roatan is a moderate to low risk area for Malaria, but you still have to be safe. Also they don't ask for any medical records to enter the country.

Thanks for your reply... We are going in June... flying out of Miami..
Are you going through SAP?
Are you taking the anti malaria medicine?

I traveled to Honduras 2 x during 2006. The first to Roatan and the second to Copan. Both times I took the malaria meds. I had already had Hep A and B vaccines, got the thyphoid and Tetnus too. I was never asked for any documentation on immunizations, although I did bring copies just in case. Have fun, be safe.

Did the meds bother you? Any side effects? I am going with my husband and my two college kids and I think we will all take it to be on safe side. Guess I need to update Tetnus...
