I have a
Jon line hook on a long line with a clip on the opposite end.
The line is long enough so that I can be behind another diver at the same depth.
It is stored shortened using a
chain sinnet knot, the knot is retained with a double ender. The sinnet knot shortens the rope making it about a meter long.
The line is stowed in a small pouch on my waist band, with the bailout tables.
The line is also quite heavy, about 5mm diameter (1/4").
Under normal circumstances, I use it shortened. If its very congested on the stop i release the chain sinnet, allowing to float behind the rest of the divers.
I alway carry cutting tools, I have come close to having to cut the line in very strong currents where the hook has jammed so tightly in to the shot line that I have almost been unable to release it.
Be careful, I have seen people get the jon line wrapped around stages etc.
In an emergency I have used a reel and a couple of double enders. Its not an ideal solution, but has served a purpose in an emergency.
