When I took my first class, at the Y, we were always told to “dress from your feet, on up” and pack accordingly. It’s only when I’ve gone “off-script,” have I forgotten anything.

I’ve never really carried a formal list . . .
 
Lots of good ideas posted here. I use this list when I'm packing for a month in the Keys. I also have one for the boat and clothes.
 

Attachments

Before I leave home:

  • Wetsuit
  • Vest
  • Hood
  • Gloves
  • Dive Booties
  • Fins (both)
  • Ensure mask is clean, if not, wash thoroughly
  • Snorkel
  • BCD
  • Weights in weight bag
  • Weight Belt
  • Weight Pockets
  • Regulator set
  • Tanks in car
  • Tank O-Rings are in good condition
  • Ensure tanks have full air (do at shop)
  • Ensure regulator is working, and SPG reads correctly
  • Ensure BCD holds air and deflates with dump valves
  • Ensure BCD can be orally inflated and deflated through hose
  • Rash Guard
  • Towel
  • Swimsuit
  • Logbook (and pen)
  • DSMB and reel
  • Slate and Pencil
  • Mask Defog
  • Knife (sharpen if needed)
  • Zipper grease

  • Spare mouthpiece/zipper ties

When I set up gear:

  • Ensure tank is turned on
  • Ensure gauges are oriented correctly and work
  • Ensure regulators are working
  • Make sure mask seals
  • Ensure BCD is hooked up correctly to tank
  • Defog mask
  • Attack snorkel
  • Put wetsuit vest on
  • Put wetsuit on and keep around waist
  • Put weights in weight pockets
  • Put weight belt around waist
  • Put wetsuit boots on
  • Put hood on (if using hood)
  • Attach dive knife to thigh
  • Put DSMB in pocket with reel
  • Ensure lights work, both tank and handheld, turn on before you get in the water, and LEAVE on
  • Ensure GoPro is on
  • Understand where buddy’s belt releases are, familiarize myself with their equipment
  • Understand, will buddy donate primary or octopus?
  • Explain to my buddy how I will donate my primary, and use my integrated inflator
