The only issue I can see is the wingnut contacting your back. but is there some religious DIR ethos about not putting the wingnut on the outside and the nut/ carriage bolt head on the inside facing your back?

DIR is like a religion and there are different sects. I am an agnostic so I don't know for sure, but would assume it is a no-no because the protruding nut and bolt could get caught on something. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime it. The other thing I wonder about, is how the tank bands for doubles would fit on a plate like that. I would think at a minimum you would need longer bolts.
