Like maintaining your wife's car. You can can be lazy, skimp and she will probably never notice. But if it strands her someplace, you are in a world of hurt that just won't stop.
 
Its like maintaining a pair of old boots, if they start to get uncomfortable give them a polish and stick a patch on the worn out bits and they will probably be fine. Just remember hell hath no fury like a Demand valve scorned.
