As a parent with a non-diving spouse, I've waited patiently for some time to grow my own dive buddies. I've walked that fine line... sharing experiences, without pressuring them, but definitely trying to entice them all the same. While planning our recent trip to Maui, we made reservations for a "Snuba" (surface air assisted dive) excursion. I offered the kids an opportunity to try a scuba intro shore dive if they were comfortable with the Snuba experience. I called Shaka Diver's Doug Corbin, and arranged the class.
Doug handled the kids like a pro... he kept them relaxed and light-hearted, all the while conveying the serious points of safe diving.
Two hours of instruction fairly flew by. My wife and I were close by, admiring the way Doug kept their attention. The four of us suited up, walked to the beach, and entered the water. Doug's 41 minute guided tour mesmerized the kids.
Rhys and Zoe raved about the dive, and want to do their checkout dives with Shaka Doug on our next trip to Maui this winter. My wife and I marvel at the ease with which he handled the group... the mark of a true professional.
Doug and I did a night dive later that week, an hour and twelve minutes of cruising a beautiful reef, full of lively critters. I entrusted my kids to this guy... what more can be said?
