I would consider myself an advanced beginner in terms of underwater photography. Currently I have been using a Canon SD 870 with the Canon housing and a Sea & Sea YS-27 strobe and have been very happy with the setting--except that the Canon housing does not allow for lenses.

Wanting to go to the next baby step, instead of upgrading to DSLR, I decided to get a newer model point and shoot with an Ikelite housing that allows for macro and wide angle lenses. I got the sony HX5V instead of the comparable Canon SX210.

The one thing I overlooked in my decision is that the Sony HX5V does not have a manual setting for macro. The intelligent mode that recognizes a macro shot does not allow for setting the flash to on all the time (it's either automatic or off). This means that taking macro pictures and taking advantage of my strobe would not be as easy as with my current trustworthy Canon SD 870!

I got the HX5V camera but have not bought the housing yet, and if I can't take macro shots I will probably sell the camera and get something else that can better do macro. Before I decide on that though, I want to know if using a macro lens would solve this problem (I have never used external lenses)--or if there are other alternative settings I could use to shoot macro.

Let me know if you have any recommendations!

Felipe
