@ChaosReid

I always fly Garuda on internat Indo flights

From their website:

enjoy a generous baggage allowance* of 30kg (66LBS) for Economy Class and 40kg for Business Class on your international flights, PLUS receive an additional 23kg for other sporting equipment, absolutely FREE!

I do print out their web page in case the desk agents haven't been informed. With this allowance I can (and have) gone for a month taking both Wing and sidemount gear and deco regs as well as a decent amount of clothes without a problem

Hope this helps

Thanks - good advice, as always. May I ask what you can recommend for diving out of Dubai since I've flown through a few times now (Emirates is great from East Coast USA to several great dive destinations).

That's their international allowance. I think domestic economy is 20kg but the 23kg for sporting equipment remains the same.

Any one knows if the likes of Wings Air or Lion Air allow us to purchase extra seats? Similar to when people carry musical instruments onboard? Honestly, looking at Bali-Labuanbajo at $40 I would gladly purchase two seats and take two sets of hand luggage ...

I caught Indonesian dive bug & have been diving in Indonesia just about every year, some times twice a year, in the last 10 years (6x in Raja Ampat, 3x in Komodo, 2x in Lembeh /Bunaken, 10x in Bali, 1x in Alor, 1x in Maratua Atoll). Never have any problem with luggage weight. I stick to Garuda as much as possible since they allow 25kg extra luggage for the dive gear.

They also don’t check the weight of my carryon. Several times I carry 2 backpacks one on my chest & one on my back. I carry bunch of electronics & carrying lots on Li ion batteries, spare underwater camera.

You don’t want to rent dive gear for diving safety reason, including BCD as you are more familiar with your own gears than the rental ones. E.g. you simply don’t want to press wrong button (inflating the BCD when you want to descend in a some swift current, which Komodo sites have plenty of) & ended up getting AGE in remote place.

Enjoy diving in Komodo!

First time traveling to Indo so this may be a silly question but I noticed that sometimes sporting equipment &/or dive gear is exempt from airlines baggage weight requirements.

Does this mean your dive gear has to be bagged separately?

I usually have a suitcase packed 50/50 with dive gear and my other travel stuff and my wife has her own 50/50 suitcase.

Should we change this approach and pack all dive gear in one suitcase and our other stuff in another suitcase?

I usually bring 2 bags, a dive bag and a smaller carryon suitcase & backpack. In dive bag I put my dive gears (BCD, fins, wetsuit, reg, mask, etc.) and some clothing & other stuff to get to 50-lb weight. The rest of the stuff is is the carryon suitcase, which may get up to 30-40lbs. I put my electronics in my backpack, including the Li-ion batteries.

extra luggage charges are cheap on Lion Air FYI... no need to leave behind any gear if you already own some ...

We will be on Batik air Jakarta to Sorong in Oct, anyone know approximately what excess luggage weight costs? Leaving for Bonaire today and weighed my luggage and both suitcases weighed 49 pounds and carry on-- 33 pounds (lots of camera equipment and extra batteries for everything adds up). Don't want to be caught short of funds. Thanks

We do the same, everything all mixed together to distribute padding and weight in a useful fashion, doesn't really work for us to do otherwise. We told Garuda we had dive gear at checkin and got the extra allowance no questions. We did hear a story from some folks who got checked/caught (worked on a liveaboard and were taking a bunch of small supplies and paperwork back to the boat, but I guess that wasn't close enough to dive gear. I have no idea how often they actually check, but my guess is if you can open a bag and show them a reasonable amount of gear you're ok.
