You can do some penetration in the Hyde and Markham. A few long passageways and crew quarters on the Hyde. I have not penetrated the Markham yet but it can be done. I can get a hold of some simple schematics of the layout of the ships nothing to detailed though.

john,
when were you out at the 18 fathom wreck? I was going to go two weeks ago but had a cold. How many lionfish did you see? Sounds like I missed a damn good dive.

Pat

Two weeks ago, same trip you missed. I didn't see any lionfish. It was hard to see anything due to all the baitfish. The sharks don't scatter, they pretty much ignore you. They certainly don't bother to get out of the way. You could swim over the wreck, the bait would part and there would be large sand tiger swimming by you.
You literally couldn't see the wreck because of all the bait.

cra2: it's south and west of Frying Pan Light tower.
Great dive, long ride. Well worth the trip.

John

whats the water temps like in late summer?

and how come I keep reading that NC dives are advanced (deep, heavy currents, etc)? we're by no means "advanced" divers, having only a couple dozen dives to 90ft under our belts.

In mid summer it averages in the mid to upper 70's. Aquatic Safaris web page has a link named current conditions and it tell the vis, temp, and current on most of the dives we made last year.

I wouldn't say all NC diving is "advanced " diving. The advanced diving, in my opinion, refers the 100+ ft wrecks which in Wilmington lie well offshore. There are plenty of dives that are less then 100 ft that can be visited by any competent diver.

Flouderer,
You mention above that there are a few dives that can be had in Hatteras by divers who are NOT advanced... Can you offer a list of a few?
I'll be in Hatteras June4 - 12 with my son (15 yrs old certed for 2 years) and another diver who will be freshly OW cert'd the last part of may.
We're looking to do some diving of the "least threatening" kind. I have no ambitions of doing anything over 100' on this trip. I'm just anxious to get everybody in Ocean or even in the Sound... I don't care as long as we have some kind of decent Vis. where we're from "good" vis is anything more than a few inches...:(

Thanks
