Malibu may be a bit of a drive for you if you are not used to the distances So Cal drivers think of as routine. Veterans at Redondo will be the closest spot for a night dive from LAX and the DiveVets group regularly dives on Wed nights. The summer concert series that takes place on the nearby pier may disrupt the group's normal dive plans, so I would introduce yourself on their website to see what they will be doing on the 8th.
Dive N Surf and Sea d Sea are the two dive shops in Redondo. They are both about four blocks from Veterans Park in opposite directions, but Eco Dive on Sepulveda may be closer to where you are staying for purposes of returning gear the next day.
Dive N' Surf and Eco Dive both have dive clubs and so does Pacific Wilderness which is located in San Pedro.
