The missus and I are new divers, as Ohio residents, we plan to do most of our diving in the Midwest, esp the Great Lakes, with the occasional trip to Fla or Carribean....Was wondering if there is a good "do-all" reg that we should be looking for while we are starting to accumulate our gear, one that will stand up to deep, cold dives and also perform ok in the warmer climates. Is there such a thing? Or are we going to have to get two sets of regs?....I know you are the ones to ask about such things..I await the flood of good replies..thanks and hope to see you all soon

Look for a sealed first stage for use in cold water. I personally use Apeks. They will perform just fine in warm water.

For the most part, the mid to upper level regs in the shops up here will work in cold water. Personally, I like diaphragm regs up here vs. the piston models. But that is me, not everybody!

I have a Dive-Rite, two Aqualung Legend LX's (equivalent to the Apek's that people rave about) and an Atomic Z1. They all work well. But you will see several opinions and they all have valid points.

I like the Zeagle DSV. I use it regularly in cold water 42 degrees and take it on warm water diving trips as well. Check out www.zeagle.com

I use the Apeks ATX 200 / ATX 40 Octo when diving singles, although it's my first reg, I'am very pleased with it's performance, I've had it in water temps from the mid 30° to low 60° range. It's well worth looking at.

I have a Dacor Viper that has a Cold water diving kit installed. I used that for everything from ice diving(relatively shallow) to diving in South Carolina. It will not reliably work in cold and deep situations. Once you get past about 120 feet in 36 degree water, get ready for a freeflow. It performed well otherwise though. I have since switched to a Poseidon Xstream and have no more problems, not to mention a purge that will clear the reg and your ears. Ha.
