I am a fairly new diver and currently own a Sherwood Blizzard and have had no problems. I'm looking for a new reg for my son and we will be doing mostly cold water dives in the Great Lakes. Any suggestions while staying in the same price range as a Blizzard? Also has anybody had any troubles with their Blizzards? :)

Absolutely ANY dry sealed Apeks reg new or second-hand

I've dived in 3 deg centigrade fresh water with a wind chill factor down to -4 deg, providing care is taken pre dive they are no problem at all

They have got to be reliable if/when you dive under the ice

Cheers

What kind of diving are you planning on doing? Everyone so far is right. The Apeks regs are great, I dive them myself. But if you (and your son) are staying above 100ft, aren't ice diving, not doing penetration (wreck or cave), then there is little wrong with staying with the Blizzards. They are a good and time tested design.

Another element is what kind of regs does you LDS support. You'll need to get them serviced - getting that done locally is easier and cheaper.

So start with what kind of diving you are going to do and then pick the reg that suits your pocketbook, the opportunity to get it serviced, and the safety record that the manufacturer has (and they are pretty well all very good.)

(And hold out for the free T-shirt :D )

Thanks for the help so far, but in my rookie status I must ask: Who makes the TX's?

Apeks

Apeks makes terrific regulators that are the choice of many technical divers. The Blizzard has a long history of satisfied customers, also, although they are less popular with the dark hordes.
