Any of you DIR pros out there, can someone clear this up for me.

I've seen this drill done a couple of different ways. My question is why, in some cases, a doanee may loop the long hose around his/her neck.

If you look at the 5th D skills video the doanee does not loop the long hose. The video displayed both divers attempting to control the hose. I can see were something unforseen might happen to the doanar that may jerk the reg from the doanees mouth. This would be a good reason to loop the hose because it would provide the doanee a chance to recover the reg before separation occured.

What is the proper method and why or why not?

Annie

once the full length of the long hose is deployed the OOA makes a loop of the extra hose and grasps that loop in his/her hand. The OOA is responsible for controlling the long hose.

I'm not a DIR pro but i'll answer anyway:)

It depends on how you want to swim.

Face to face (for ascent) or OOA diver on the left - the OOA diver should make a loop and hold the loop

OOA diver on the right - the OOA diver can loop the hose behind their neck

Single file - OOA diver in front

These were some of the formations we practiced on the DIRf course.

You will also notice in one of the videos that the recipient clips the reg to the harness itself. I have also seen some people loop the hose for the already mentioned reason, but all of this depends on where you are. In a single file line in a cave, you don't have the option, so you are in single file. In open water, you have many more options as to how to position yourself so you are comfortable.

When we practice our S Drill prior to our drills, neither of us loop the hose, we position it as you would normally.

I had a recreational diver grab my reg out of my mouth one time because he was out of air, as is the normal practice in real life. I was glad I had a long hose, as I could safely distance myself from that diver in the event he really panicked and lost it. He had no problems maintaining control while we ascended, and he was only an OWD,so I would hope that the more advanced divers would be able to keep things in good order.

Good question, and lets keep watching to see if a standardized format comes to pass within GUE about this.

There is a standardized format. Have you taken DIR-F yet? If not, please do. You cannot learn DIR from the videos posted on 5thD... they are valuable tools but NOT a class.

The diver clipping off the reg to his harness was clipping off his OWN (ooa) reg. ANY time a reg is not in your mouth, it is properly parked... either on a bungee around your neck, clipped to your harness, or properly captured on a stage rig. You NEVER, EVER allow a reg to dangle by the hose, creating a hazard for damage to the reg/reef/cave, or entanglement.

Someone else posted above the four positions that the two divers may take relative to each other, and their proper hose routing... face to face, OOA right, OOA left, OOA lead.

The other time you will clip off your reg is during your valve drill (or if you have an actual failure of your primary 1st stage). Shut down the right post, breathe the reg down, remove it, go to your backup, park the primary.

Are you implying that the recipient clips the donated reg off to his harness?
Of course... you don't wait until you are completely OOA before telling your buddy that you are... you signal OOA, get his reg, then clip it off to your harness so you'll know exactly where it is when you DO run OOA :D
