New Orleans Saints V San Diego Chargers
Wembley Stadium

LONDON -- It took just 90 minutes on Thursday to sell 40,000 tickets made available for the NFL's second overseas regular-season game.

The San Diego Chargers and New Orleans Saints will play on October 26 at Wembley Stadium in London, England.

The tickets were available to fans who were randomly selected from an overwhelming number of registered ticket requests.

The Dolphins and Giants played the first-ever regular-season game outside North America in 2007.

"We are delighted to report the overwhelming interest in this year's game," said Alistar Kirkwood, managing director of NFL UK. "Today's sales at Ticketmaster have matched the pace at which tickets were bought for last year's game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants, which was historic in being the first-ever regular-season game outside North America. This proves that our event is one of the most eagerly awaited on the British sports calendar."

Because of the demand for tickets, the NFL released an additional 5,000 tickets that went on sale immediately. There also has been an increase in the number of tickets that will be offered in the second sale of tickets to fans who registered in February when the game was announced.

Last year's Wembley game was such a success that the NFL has committed to playing at least one game in the UK for each of the next three seasons, beginning with this year's matchup of teams who have each come within one game of reaching the Super Bowl in the past two seasons.

The Chargers are led by running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who set an NFL record by scoring 31 touchdowns in 2006 and was also named the league's MVP that season.

The Saints feature one of the most exciting players in the NFL in running back Reggie Bush, who appeared alongside English soccer star David Beckham in a series of TV commercials following the former England captain's move to America.

Both Tomlinson and Bush are scheduled to make a promotional visit to London next month.

Saints acquire Shockey from Giants

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Jeremy Shockey was traded to the Saints for two draft picks Monday, giving New Orleans a disgruntled star tight end who watched from the sideline while injured as the New York Giants surged to the Super Bowl title.

The Giants will get second- and fifth-round picks in the 2009 draft. The deal must be approved by the league and is contingent on Shockey passing a physical.

The deal reunites Shockey with Saints coach Sean Payton, who was the Giants' offensive coordinator in 2002, when Shockey was Rookie of the Year.

"I have had a relationship with coach Payton and I appreciate what he has done as a head coach," Shockey said in a statement released by the Saints. "The Saints have a lot of weapons starting with Drew Brees and I look forward to joining my teammates at training camp. This will be a fun year."

The Saints report to training camp in Jackson, Miss., on Wednesday with several other tight ends on the roster, including last year's starter, Eric Johnson, along with Billy Miller and Mark Campbell.

Shockey, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who spent six seasons with the Giants, broke his leg against the Washington Redskins on Dec. 16.

He is known for his offensive ability more than his blocking, and was unhappy even before the injury -- he was asked to block in addition to catch. Once hurt, he didn't like the fact that much was made of the Giants winning with rookie Kevin Boss in his place.

"Jeremy brought great energy to the game every time he stepped on the field," Giants team president John Mara said. "He had a close relationship with my father from the time we drafted him, and I had a couple of long conversations with Jeremy this spring and summer. From those conversations, it was apparent to me that a fresh start was the best thing for us and for Jeremy."

The Giants, a proven winner without Shockey in the lineup, cut ties with a player who provided plenty of excitement on the field and plenty of distractions off it -- throwing a cup of ice in the stands during a playoff game in San Francisco, criticizing Giants fans for leaving a game early, or skipping voluntary team workouts in favor an offseason program run by his agent.

The Giants also unload the remainder of a five-year, $31.2 million contract extension that Shockey signed in 2005.

Shockey had 371 catches for 4,228 yards and 27 touchdowns with the Giants. He was drafted out of Miami with the 14th overall pick in the 2002 draft.

The Saints have been seeking a tight end who is more of a downfield threat than Johnson, who caught 48 passes for 378 yards last year as a starter.

"Jeremy is a player that we are excited to have on our roster. He is someone I am familiar with as a player," Payton said. "He brings a skill set to the position that I feel will be a tremendous benefit to our offense."

The Saints' offense has been among the best in the NFL during Payton's first two seasons as coach, with Brees eclipsing 4,000 yards passing in each of them.

The hope in New Orleans is that Shockey's addition as a receiving threat, when combined with receiver Marcus Colston and Reggie Bush coming out of the backfield or lining up in the slot, will give Brees the options he needs to move the ball, no matter what defenses attempt.

Shockey's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, called last season a difficult one for his client, who was looking for a change of scenery.

"He's been one of the most successful tight ends in NFL history, but now I think he's going to be more prolific in the Saints' offense," Rosenhaus said. "I don't think Jeremy could ask for a better situation."

NFL UK is excited to announce that there will be a free New Orleans-themed Tailgate Party at Wembley Stadium from 11:00am to 4:00pm prior to this year’s International Series game between the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers at Wembley Stadium on Sunday October 26th. The Tailgate Party is open to all International Series Game ticket holders.

The 20,000 person party will be the biggest organized tailgate event ever to take place in the UK, and will include New Orleans-based jazz bands, NFL Experience games and a Mardi Gras parade.

Live on stage will be a variety of famed New Orleans jazz to get the party in full swing.

Also appearing at the Tailgate Party will be Saints’ cheerleaders, who will perform on stage for fans prior to taking the field.

In addition to the New Orleans-themed entertainment, there will be exciting food and drink options available to attendees. Authentic New Orleans recipes like jambalaya and étouffe will be on offer in addition to traditional football fare like hotdogs and hamburgers.

Coors Light – the Official beer sponsor of the NFL -- will be providing a beer garden for NFL fans to meet-up and enjoy some ice cold, Rocky Mountain refreshment before kick-off of the big game between the Saints and Chargers.

Also available for fans attending the event will be a large Reebok NFL merchandise marquee, which will include an array of NFL gear including replica jerseys, caps, t-shirts, helmets, footballs and special commemorative International Series souvenirs.

If you want to spend time at the Tailgate Party sharpening your football skills there will be 11 NFL Experience games on site available to test your ability. Practice your throwing, blocking, catching, kicking, tackling and running with a variety of different fun games that will appeal to children and adults.

If playing football on screen is more your thing, then EA Sports will be there giving everyone an opportunity to play their latest and greatest NFL title: Madden NFL 09. There will also be a limited number of walk-up spots available to compete in the UK’s Madden Challenge Finals, where you will have an opportunity to win great prizes -- including a Grand Prize trip to Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort and Spa in January 2009, to compete for a share of prizes totalling US$100,000 in the global Madden Challenge Finals!

The party gets underway at 11:00am, with three custom-designed Mardi Gras floats at 12:00pm which will arrive at the Tailgate site from the streets surrounding Wembley behind a rousing New Orleans marching band. Vibrantly coloured revelers on the floats will throw traditional New Orleans beads into the crowds to set the atmosphere alight and prepare fans for the big game in the stadium. Following behind the floats will be musicians including members of the Apache Mardi Gras Indian Tribe.
At 4:00pm the Tailgate Party will come to a close with the procession of the Mardi Gras floats from the Tailgate site into the stadium, where they will contribute to the pre-game entertainment.

The entertainment will spill over into the streets surrounding Wembley, with musical entertainment on Olympic Way and at Wembley Stadium Station, as well as the passing of the Mardi Gras parade floats through the surrounding streets before their arrival at the Tailgate party.
