One thing I've always wondered about the Genesis scooters: is there any kind of detent or marking that makes it straightforward to set at a defined 'cruise' speed? I use my (known, tested in different configs) scooter cruise speed as a big input for navigation (i.e. 'scoot on X heading for Y minutes, then drop down and expect to see a wall'), and not having a reliable way to know my speed (absent of current) would be a dealbreaker for me.

No. But, you can mount (for example) a Seacraft ENC3 nav unit, with their speed sensor, on a Genesis. Then you can navigate with great precision.
 
I think you are missing the point of fully variable speed at the handle. There is no need for "just a quick catch up" when you can easily vary your speed to stay in position the entire time. DPVs that are limited to preset speed steps by "clicking" or those where it's annoying to reach the speed knob, condition the user to accept that crappy user interface. Imagine if the gas pedal in you car was simply an ON/OFF switch and you had to reach up to the dashboard to adjust your rpm. A stupid concept, right? ...but that describes most of the DPVs on the market. The Genesis is the car equivalent of a fully variable gas pedal. You want to go faster, you nudge the thumb lever up, you want to go slower, you nudge it down. ...simple.

I think you're kind of missing the point because you're ingrained in your position. That's fine it's a different philosophy. I completely agree about "geared" DPVs I don't want that all the black tips are infuriating because you're constantly bouncing speeds around between gears.

I'm a pilot and drive boats when I want to adjust speed I reach up the throttle and make the adjustment, and I'd argue that driving a scooter underwater specially in a team is much more similar to driving a boat or flying an airplane that driving a car where I'm constantly varying my speed. When we dpv in formation the leader picks a speed, and the rest of the team matches speed to that diver. If you start to fall behind for whatever reason it's really nice just to give it a quick burst and then have it go right back to your previously perfectly matched speed.

I agree that reaching forward to where it is on the suex is annoying, one of the reasons I am considering the genesis.

Is there any place in cave country that have rental genesis?
 
My wife and I recently did DPV1 and we're looking to upgrade from blacktips. During the class we spent about about 8 hours on the trigger of SUEX XJ-S and we had some things we really liked about them compared to the blacktips

  • Does it come correctly weighted out of the box?
  • Will it pull straight hands free?
  • Is the scooter "infinitely adjustable"?
  • Is there an option to "jump" one of the things we really liked about the SUEX was the 2 position trigger.
The mag prop coupler and the travel ability of the gensis are really appealing.

Yes, the mag coupler is awesome.

I was scootering along on my BlackTip (before I got my Genesis) next to a wreck at about 240 feet. Some fishing line I didn't see got sucked in and wrapped around my prop shaft.

It was a bit of a pain in the butt to stop and hold the scooter while my buddy slowly wound the prop backwards and managed to get the line out. Fortunately, it didn't take that long. You can't be hanging around forever messing with fishing line at that depth.

Not an issue with the Genesis!

There is sort of an option to "jump" - in that you can just snap the speed control all the way to 100% in an instant.

I have or have used a couple of scooters that have that "jump" function, one way or another. My BlackTip (with custom firmware), and my friend's Magnus (double-twist the trigger quickly). Like Jon said - it's a Band-aid for a trigger/speed control that kinda sucks.

Infinitely variable speed control, with the same hand that is operating the trigger, is The Bomb.

Also, compared to the Suex, I believe the Genesis scooters give you significantly longer run-time for the same weight of scooter.

The XJ-S gives you 185 minutes at cruise (~150fpm) and weighs 44#. XJ-S - Suex

The Genesis 3.1 gives over 300 minutes at cruise and weighs 34#. Genesis 3.1 | Logic Dive Gear

Plus, the XJ-S gives a max of 330 Newtons of thrust (~74#).

The G3.1 give 400 Newtons! (over 90#).

The G3.1 is shorter, lighter, stronger, and runs longer. Oh, and you don't have to break the seal on the hull to charge it like you do with the Suex.

If you liked the XJ-S, I think you would LOVE a G3.1.

I probably sound like a used scooter salesman, so disclaimer: I have no affiliation with Logic Dive Gear (maker of the Genesis). I'm just a very happy customer (who also started with and still has a BlackTip).
 
Is there any place in cave country that have rental genesis?
Matt at Flippers in Jacksonville , Charlie at Fathom in Gainesville and Landon at Deep6 is around there frequently and should be able to do a demo. Pete McCumber also has a couple and could probably set you up. That would show you how easy it is to not fall behind in the first place, so you don't then need to catch up.
 
I'll take the variable thumb throttle over the SUEX trigger any day. You don't have to hold anything with the trigger locked (where it sits 99% of the time I'm moving) and still have complete control over speed. Easy to swap hands for reg switching etc.

You don’t have to hold the Suex trigger, FWIW. It would be nice if the speed control was on the handle though.

Being able to release the trigger and lock it out, and/or turn the throttle off with either hand is very convenient.
