Sunny Mass - Wheah the lobstahs aah!
based on previous discussions, its seems that early winter is a better time of year to hunt for bugs- anyone know if thats true?
I'm new to lobster diving so consider me "clueless"
Also, Would a 6mm wetsuit suffice on a New England winter dive or is a drysuit the only option?

FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!!!:boom:
sorry - had todo it :D

.

Soggy once bubbled...

Heck, I just wear a 5mm shorty!

You dive in new england in the winter in a 5mm shorty??? sorry but im gonna have to call B.S on that one and whats is your prob with that question decapod?

I'll re-phrase,
is it ok to dive New England in Nov and Dec with a regular wetsuit, or is a drysuit necessary? And since there are fewer divers in the water at that time of year, is there better lobstering?
- is there a "lobstering season" like all other hunting game?
Is there anyone else out there who may know this?
That was a good one Soggy, but the humor forum is a little higher up in the Scuba Board home page. While your at it, you should post your pictures in there too. HeHeHe
:out:

Sorry...

It is a valid question. I just thought you were kidding because of
FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!!!

I do know that as the water gets cooler, the lobster go into deeper water. In late December-April, you won't see a bug in site.

Diving in the winter in a 6mm wetsuit is probably not the best idea, but a lot depends on your personal tolerance to the cold. I can tolerate a dive down to about 45 degrees with a 7mm hooded full-suit plus a 5mm shorty underneath (core warmer), but only for shallow dives. Below that and a drysuit is a necessity for me. Others will dive in a 2-piece 7mm down to about 40 degrees. Below that and you're crazy. January through May and the water temperature is usually in the 30s...that close to freezing and you don't want to be wet.

In November, the water temperatures are about where they are in late May, early June (high 40s) and a wetsuit would be ok for short dives. It starts getting pretty cold in December, though.

comment, not the question.

I agree with Soggy. I find that once the water hits about 44° (Late October usually), the bugs go deep. It turns into a wasteland. I still like going but it becomes an issue of safety if you're wet. As a buddy of mine said "I'm fine wearing a wetsuit in December. Of course, I can only stay under for about 20 minutes and I need to do a 2 hour SIT with the heat blasting (which someone else has to do since I can't feel my fingers or toes) but I'm fine ". Riiiiiiight;)
