My wife and I are contemplating a liveaboard trip. I've read about Nekton. Any other ideas for liveaboards departing from the US? We want to be able to drive to the departure point so as to save $....

Thanks

I know you said you've read about the Nekton, but I just had to give it my recommendation.

Here are a few that I have found.

Sail Juliet - Books mostly with Dive Shops
Paradise Charterers - Husband & Wife Team, geat outfit Only 6 divers per trip.
Carribean Explorer
Aqua Cat

And of course Neketon.

I have personally done Paradise Charters, really great people. Very hospitable. KInda like being with your Aunt and Uncle for a week/weekend.

Keep in mind though that all charters leaving from Flordia likely head towards Bahamas or at least south in which case you will have to cross the Gulf Stream. This can be as enjoyable as a long boat ride or as rough a riding a Bull for 10 hours.

Also with the crossing you have to clear Bahamas customs when you get over. This is not a big deal but it with delay you from getting into the water as quickly as say Black Beards would.

Technically with BB you could do your check out dive on the way out of port! I have not heard of this happening but since they leave at 3pm from the dock there would be plenty of time to do a dusk dive.

Hope this helps.

:)You have my vote for Nekton that departs out of Fort Lauderdale. I am going on my 3rd & 4th trip starting September 15, 2007. Call the office and ask for information. BTW...there is room for you this coming weekend for the NW Bahamas onboard the Rorqual.

Roger THAT !! ...second the motion for Nekton. It just doesn't get any better than Nekton ...

Juliet sails from Miami. Great time on it...been 2 times....saw plenty of shark, dolphin, and fish. They only accommodate 12 passengers so their boats fill up ...they are a really relaxing sailboat...sailjuliet.com

To my knowledge, neither Aqua Cat, nor any of the Caribbean Explorer boats depart from a mainland US port.

There's the Shearwater out of Palm Beach. Does shark/dolphin trips to the Bahamas.

diveborg's right. CEX1 is out of Georgetown, Exuma, CEXII does Turks/Caicos and Aquacat is out of Nassau. Sometimes you can find inexpensive local flights to Exuma (BahamasAir) or Nassau from either Miami or Ft. Lauderdale - my buddy just did.
