Before suggesting a better strategy than your current one, I'll point that it sounds funny that you are asking us about a trip that will take multiple weeks of your time, a heckofa lot of travel and thousands of dollars, but less than $20 is too much to ask when you haven't found any other sources of information about the boats you are considering. And less than 5% of Tripadvisor reviews are fake?! That's hilarious! Regardless, consider that you might find Undercurrent useful for more than just this trip especially once you spend time on a liveaboard friendly location like RA.

A better strategy to get info on your trips would be to narrow your search to say two boats and then start by asking here about those specific boats. You might get more info that way rather than where can I find out info on all the boats in RA.

Is there a website where people write reviews of liveaboard boats? It cracks me up how a resort that accomodates 20 people or so with have hundreds of reviews, but I feel lucky if I manage to find even one review of a liveaboard that I'm looking at (Raja Ampat). I haven't been able to find anything through google. Any suggestions? Why is there not a Tripadvisor for boats?...lol.
What liveaboards are you looking at? Maybe people on here can give you reviews.

What's funny is that I had literally just said on my last post that that is exactly what I intend to do. The intention of this post was to try to find sources of info to help me narrow things down. And, as I have mentioned several times now, only one of the six boats I have been considering have any reviews at all on Undercurrent. I'll also add that there are zero reviews for the other place I'm now considering staying at for the Lembeh portion of the trip. So, FOR ME, it is clearly NOT worth $20. I don't know why this is so difficult to understand. It's like everyone just feels the need to justify why THEY pay for it...lol. Meanwhile, TripAdvisor has 89 reviews on it for free. They just, for some reason, don't have any for the boats.

What's actually hilarious is when a website claims the reason they charge $20 is so there aren't ads, even though it is clearly an inhibitor to amassing a review database. Tell ya what. Take a look at the first few pages worth of reviews on Kungkungan Bay Resort and let me know which you think are fake.

Once I have it narrowed down some, I will likely do that. I'm just in the beginning research phase. Ahout to get analysis paralysis...lol.

I just looked at my Undercurrent subscription (over 15 year subscriber). In the Indonesia Diving reviews, there are over 25 reviews of boats, Dewi Nusantara, Damai, Mermaid Areuni,Pelagian, and on and on and on for 2106/17. You need to be a subscriber to see the full list. This is where you are going to get the most objective view of Indonesia Diving. We have been on the Tambora and Damai twice.

It seems you've gotten your answer. No, there is no single site with lots of good reviews of all liveaboards around the world. Researching dive trips to some places can be challenging.

Yes, Undercurrent costs something, though less than in the past when some of their information was not easily found elsewhere. But it's still a publication, not simply a website with the only purpose of "amassing a review database", although that is certainly an important part of it. Some people find that a few reliable reviews from frequent divers and the other content is worth a few bucks to them, and the piles of free reviews that tend to be from from casual divers (maybe not fake, but often not useful) or people with agendas are worth what they paid for them. If you don't want to subscribe then don't, but there's no point in continuing to whine about it. It is what it is.

The reason you aren't finding reviews for the boats on TripAdvisor is because the people that take liveaboard trips like that are more serious divers and will rarely post a review of a trip like that on a general purpose travel site like TripAdvisor, or use it for research. It's not the right venue. If they post a review they will do it here, Undercurrent, other dive-specific boards, maybe even a personal blog. Some of the large dive travel agencies may have resources that are not necessarily biased (even the simple fact that they book a boat - or not - may in some cases tell you something.) If you haven't found the info in a google search and some digging from whatever bits you find, it's probably not sitting out there.

Yes, it's polite to do your homework and not ask the same old things about a common place that has been reviewed a zillion times. Or give a list of every boat in Indonesia and ask which you should take. It appears you've done your homework best you can and not found any info to narrow down your choices more, so just ask already about your shortlist of boats. It's helpful to tell what's important to you. Questions here about specific boats may catch the attention of someone who was on it or knows someone who was on it, and get you some answers. Some people don't bother writing reviews, or mean to but don't get around to it. But if they see a question they know something about they'll answer. You might also get a suggestion of a good dive travel agent that you can talk to and figure out which boat would work best for you. They will have been on some on fam trips, and heard back from customers they've booked, and all that info may exist only in their heads. I'm not inclined to use travel agents for say a Caribbean trip where information is usually easy to come by and booking is simple. But in some regions of the world, they can definitely add value.

I can see the full list. I just can't read any review written within the last five years.

I wasn't whining about anything. When Undercurrent was first brought up as a source for the info I was seeking, I merely said that they only have one recent review out of the five or six boats I am looking at, so paying for it isn't worth it to me. Then everyone repeatedly justified why THEY pay for it even though it clearly wouldn't provide what I was looking for...lol.
